What’s the difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz?
What’s the Difference Between 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi?
When connecting to your Airwire Broadband Wi-Fi, you may notice two different wireless networks: one labeled 2.4GHz and another labeled 5GHz. These refer to the frequency bands your router uses to transmit data wirelessly. Understanding the difference between them can help you choose the best connection for your needs.
2.4GHz Wi-Fi: Wider Range, Slower Speeds
-
Best for: General web browsing, email, smart home devices, and when you're far from the router.
-
Pros:
-
Greater range: Can cover more distance and penetrate walls better.
-
Compatible with older devices: Nearly all Wi-Fi-enabled devices support 2.4GHz.
-
-
Cons:
-
More interference: Shares space with many other devices like microwaves, cordless phones, and Bluetooth devices.
-
Lower speeds: Slower maximum data rates compared to 5GHz.
-
5GHz Wi-Fi: Faster Speeds, Shorter Range
-
Best for: Streaming HD/4K video, gaming, video calls, or downloading large files—especially when you're close to the router.
-
Pros:
-
Higher speeds: Supports faster data transfer for performance-intensive tasks.
-
Less interference: Fewer devices use this band, leading to a cleaner signal.
-
-
Cons:
-
Shorter range: Doesn’t reach as far as 2.4GHz and is less effective through walls or floors.
-
Not supported by all older devices.
-
Which One Should I Use?
Here’s a simple way to choose:
| Situation | Recommended Band |
|---|---|
| You're far from the router or in another room | 2.4GHz |
| You’re streaming, gaming, or video calling nearby | 5GHz |
| You have an older device that can’t see 5GHz | 2.4GHz |
| You’re in a crowded area with lots of other networks | 5GHz (less interference) |
Most Airwire Broadband routers are dual-band, meaning they broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals. You can either:
-
Manually choose which band to connect to (you’ll see two separate Wi-Fi names like “Airwire_2.4” and “Airwire_5G”), or
-
Let the router automatically assign the best one (if band steering is enabled).
Tip: Rename Your Wi-Fi Bands
To easily identify each band, consider renaming your Wi-Fi networks. For example:
-
Airwire_Home_2.4GHz
-
Airwire_Home_5GHz
You can do this by logging into your router’s settings. If you’re not sure how, our support team can guide you.
Still Not Sure Which to Use?
If you're unsure which band is better for your setup, try both and test your speed or signal strength. Or, contact our support team for help optimizing your home network.
